What is a PFT Test?
A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to measure how well the lungs are functioning.
It helps doctors evaluate breathing capacity, airflow and, with additional tests, how well oxygen passes into the blood.

How is a PFT Test Done?
The patient breathes into a mouthpiece connected to a machine (spirometer), usually with a soft clip on the nose. A technician guides each breath, for example a deep breath in followed by a fast, full breath out, and the test is repeated a few times for accuracy. It usually takes about 15–30 minutes. Sometimes the test is repeated after an inhaler to see how much breathing improves.
